Former Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said people were “gatvol” of corruption and called on President Jacob Zuma to “step aside” in order to save the country.
Vavi was addressing a #Zumamustfall march at the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
Over a thousand people had gathered for the march, with the group making their way across the bridge.
“We have chosen this Day of Reconciliation to make a statement to other South Africans, the people of the world and the corrupt hyenas that are ripping our society apart,” he said to rising applause from the crowd.
"Zuma, you have failed the poor. You have failed the working class. You have failed the South Africans who have the brains to think independently," he said.
Vavi said people refused to be reconciled with corruption. "We are refusing to be reconciled with the eating away of the moral fibre of our society by a small elite that has managed to intimidate so many South Africans with their corruption.
"We say to the president and all those who applaud him - we are gatvol, we cannot take it anymore. We want him to step aside for the sake of the future of our children.”
