Opposition party COPE has congratulated South Africa’s latest cricket star‚ Temba Bavuma‚ who scored his first test century at Newlands on Tuesday.

The party congratulated the Proteas for getting back into the game after Hashim Amla racked up a substantial batting score‚ but gave Bavuma pride of place.

“Temba Bavuma‚ however‚ thrilled the crowd and South Africa. He and Chris Morris took on the English bowlers and their partnership of over 150 runs made the test totally safe for South Africa‚" the party said.

"That was not all. In only his seventh test‚ Temba Bavuma had our pulses racing as he made his way into the nervous nineties. Then‚ on 96‚ he steered Finn to third man and anxiously watched as the ball raced to the boundary. He had his maiden century under the belt‚” the party said in a rare statement devoid of political content.

“COPE is so thoroughly proud of Bavuma‚ the young lion with courage to match. He served the national cause with great distinction.

“COPE salutes you‚ young man. You already have all of us in your fan club. Congratulations to you and the team. We wanted to see the fighting spirit of recent times manifest itself in the team. We were so thoroughly gratified with the batting.”
