Businessman and Black Like Me founder Herman Mashaba is the Democratic Alliance's Johannesburg mayoral candidate for this year's local government elections.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane announced on Saturday that Mashaba had been selected by the electoral college to represent the party in the metro.

"The decision we took wasn't an easy one," he told reporters in Johannesburg.

"It was between two very able and competent candidates. These are South Africans who have said we want to put our shoulder to the wheel..."

Two candidates were nominated - Mashaba and Wits professor and DA councillor Rabelani Dagada.

Both nominees were interviewed by a panel.

Mashaba announced in December that he was making himself available as a nominee for the position.
