On the anniversary of FW de Klerk’s announcement to unban the African National Congress (ANC) and free Nelson Mandela‚ a new grouping has announced that it will lodge criminal charges against the former president. February 2‚ 1990 was the date of De Klerk’s history-changing decision‚ which effectively ended the apartheid era and led to him being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Mandela three years later. The little-known Anti-Racism Action Forum (ARAF) said in an advisory issued by expelled Economic Freedom Fighters MP Andile Mngxitama’s Black First Land First movement on Tuesday that it intends to stage its official launch by laying charges at Johannesburg’s Hillbrow police station on Wednesday.“ARAF shall lay 22 criminal charges against both FW De Klerk and Adrian Vlok for crimes committed against black people for which they didn’t get amnesty at the TRC (Truth and Reconciliation Commission). Further complaints of racism will be laid against FW De Klerk at the South African Human Rights Commission‚” according to the advisory.Vlok‚ a former law and order minister in the apartheid era‚ last month publicly apologised to Moeletsi Mbeki‚ brother of former President Thabo Mbeki‚ and famously washed the feet of the Rev Frank Chikane in 2006. Vlok‚ who has turned to Christianity‚ said he needed to demonstrate his contrition."Personally I have never hurt them during my time as a minister... fact of the matter is I was actively involved in apartheid and in enforcing apartheid and this has hurt them deeply..."Vlok said forgiveness and reconciliation were personal matters‚ and he had to make this apology in person."So I have been here today to do exactly this‚ to say to him I'm sorry for what I did under apartheid to hurt you and your family."Mbeki declined to comment‚ saying this was Vlok's initiative. No details of the charges were provided. The forum described itself as a “campaign against racism‚ by anti-racist civil society organisations‚ political parties‚ revolutionary movements and individuals”.The 26th commemoration of the unbanning of the ANC by the then National Party government was a trending topic on Twitter on Tuesday morning. De Klerk was commended and derided‚ as summed up by these two tweets:“FW De Klerk was only responding to pressure. He didn't out of his volition decide to hand in power. He did not contribute to our democracy.” - Mary Jane Mphahlele ‏@Mary_JaneSA“FW De Klerk had an option like many who came before him but he decided to do the right thing. ..He contributed to our democracy.” - Malusi Booi ‏@MalusiBooi – TMG Digital..
