The ruling party’s alliance partners in Gauteng welcomed the return of Paul Mashatile to the provincial administration.

A statement jointly signed by African National Congress (ANC)‚ South African Communist Party‚ Congress of South African Trade Unions and South African National Civic Organisation office-bearers expressed confidence that Mashatile “will contribute meaningfully to the province”.

ANC Gauteng provincial chairperson Mashatile will resign as a member of Parliament on Wednesday‚ and return to Gauteng as MEC for Human Settlements‚ Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

His appointment apparently came at the behest of Gauteng premier David Makhura who said on Tuesday that he needed Mashatile "to strengthen Team Gauteng".

Mashatile was the national minister of arts and culture‚ but was relegated to being an ordinary MP after he lost his bid for the position of national chairman of the ANC at the party's national conference in Mangaung in 2012.

The alliance partners’ statement on Wednesday said “Mashatile has extensive experience in government” stretching back to 1994.

They also welcomed the “redeployment of MEC Jacob Mamabolo”‚ who Mashatile replaces‚ to the Department of Infrastructure Development (DID); and MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza from DID to the Department of Social Development.

Molebatsi Bopape‚ who lost the social development portfolio‚ was “congratulated… for the work she has done since her appointment”.
