Gauteng to open 18 special needs schools this year‚ says Premier
Gauteng Premier David Makhura has outlined a number of programmes aimed of improving the quality of education in the province.Speaking at the state of the province address hosted in Sebokeng on Monday‚ Makhura said the best way to transform the economy of Gauteng was to ensure access to quality education for all the people of the province.Makhura said provincial government would increase the number of schools for children with special needs in the townships. Eight such schools have been open so far and a further 18 will be opened this year.Provincial government would also continue reaching 87‚000 children through the 1‚330 funded Early Childhood Development Centres‚ he said. Grade R pupils have been increased from 65‚000 in 2009 to 113‚000 in 2014. The target is to enrol 200‚000 Grade R pupils by 2019.Makhura lauded the Gauteng's Classroom of the Future project‚ which had seen e-learning technology rolled out to seven schools in 2015 and now is available in 1‚861 Grade 12 classrooms and 3‚098 Grade 11 classrooms...
