Corruption like a cancer and not easy to beat - law academic

If left unchecked‚ corruption becomes like a cancer‚ and soon after that endemic‚ a law expert said in a public lecture at the University of Johannesburg on Monday. But‚ due to its complex nature‚ corruption isn't all that easy to get rid off‚ Dr Mispa Roux of the university's law faculty said."By its very nature corruption is very secretive‚ one does not publicly announce [it] when committing corruption"‚ Roux said.Despite the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act (PRECCA) listing more than 34 types of crimes of corruption‚ securing a conviction under PRECCA was not easy‚ she said.Roux said corruption was increasing and it especially impacts developing states and the poor."More people in government and the private sector are being charged with corruption [than before]‚" she said.Roux said corruption infringes on human rights and the country's Constitution as it flies in the face of the most basic constitutional values. It compromised democracy‚ good governance‚ transparency and accountability. She said the frustration of transparency could clearly be seen in requests that were lodged in 2014 for documents to see who benefitted from the upgrades to President Jacob Zuma's Nkandla homestead but which were still pending.According to Roux‚ remedies to combat corruption included declaring all actions that are in violation of the Constitution as invalid‚ obtaining interdicts against such behaviour and instituting a system of constitutional damages for such conduct. - TMG Digital/TMG Courts and Law..
