The African National Congress in the Western Cape has resolved to start a campaign to re-establish street committees to deal with safety and security in communities.

This follows a crime-filled two weeks in Cape Town, where two teenagers were raped and killed, and another University of Cape Town student raped.

The resolution was made at the Provincial Executive Committee lekgotla, which started on Friday, March 11 and ended Sunday.

In their declaration, the party said they would ensure that all ANC branches participated in actively fighting crime through ward and street committees and Community Policing Forums.

"We resolved to bring back the Bambanani campaign that we once had when we still governed the Western Cape," the party said.

Khayelitsha teenager Sinoxolo Mafevuka was found half-naked at communal toilets in the area two weeks ago.

The 19-year-old had been raped and her head was stuffed in a toilet.

On Monday last week, teenager Franziska Blöchliger was killed in Tokai Forest.

Four men have since been arrested for the 16-year-old's murder.

Gender inequalities, education and health were also in the spotlight at the lekgotla.

"Central to our fight against the continued oppression of women in society is gender-based violence. We, therefore, commit to working with existing organisations that play a critical role in fighting all forms of gender violence and oppression in the province," the party declared.

The ANC lekgotla also called for more unity within the embattled province.

The upcoming local government elections presented a moment to sharpen the party's plans to ensure maximum unity in order to unseat the DA, the party said.

The lekgotla was also attended by delegates from the various party leagues and structures.
