The economy and the coming local elections are expected to be the main topics of discussion on day two of the ANC’s National Executive Committee meeting in Pretoria.
There is no indication yet as to whether the controversy over the purported Gupta family’s influence over matters of state is likely to feature in the discussions.
ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe told the media on Friday the party’s highest decision-making body would be focusing on the economy and local government elections and that the Gupta family was not on the agenda per se.
It will be however if former ANC Youth League deputy president Ronald Lamola has any say in the matter. Lamola‚ who is part of a group expected to picket outside St George's hotel in Irene where the ANC is holding its NEC conference‚ said on Saturday it's the last chance to recall President Jacob Zuma.
"We are saying the ANC NEC must be pressured to recall President Zuma as the president of the country and call a special national Congress before the of this year‚" Lamola was quoted in reports as saying.
Zuma’s relationship with the Guptas has been blamed for what has been called state capture‚ with allegations of the influential family making offers of Cabinet posts to party members.
This week Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas and former ANC MP Vytjie Mentor dropped political bomb shells with claims that the Guptas had offered them Cabinet positions‚ which they both said they had declined.
The Guptas have denied offering anyone seats on the Cabinet.
