ANC to deliver outcomes of NEC meeting on Sunday afternoon

The ANC will deliver the outcomes of the National Executive Committee meeting held at the weekend in Irene on Sunday afternoon.

The meeting was held at the end a turbulent week for the ruling party and President Jacob Zuma.

Revelations by Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas and former MP Vytjie Mentor that they had been offered Cabinet positions by the Gupta family resulted in the public and some party members calling for the NEC to take action against Zuma.

About 30 members of the ANC Youth league and members of the public picketed outside the venue on Saturday calling for the NEC to recall Zuma.

Youth league member Ronald Lamola said on Saturday its objectives had been achieved. "The message was sent and received. There won't be a protest on Sunday." 

But the party said it would not be pressured into what should be discussed at the meeting.

Secretary general Gwede Mantashe said on Friday the issue with the Guptas was not part of the agenda but would be discussed if it was brought up for debate by members.

The economy and coming local government elections were the two items on the agenda.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan not seen at the meeting. He was not there on Friday and planned to attend a forum in Durban on Sunday.

Gordhan is expected to join KwaZulu-Natal provincial chairperson Sihle Zikalala at an "Opinion Makers' Forum", aiming to create a strong and vibrant ANC. The theme of the forum is social stability, democracy, nonracialism and peace in South Africa.

Gordhan has been involved in a public spat with the elite crime fighting unit the Hawks over a rogue unit that was established at the SA Revenue Service when he was commissioner. He has also been in a power struggle with Sars commissioner Tom Moyane.

Sunday’s NEC briefing is scheduled for 15:00.
