Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) member of the National Assembly Thilivhali Elphus Mulaudzi has been taken to court after refusing to pay maintenance for his three children because he wants proof they are his.

The mother of the three children, including nine-year-old twin boys and one six-year-old girl, took the parliamentarian to the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court's maintenance division on Friday.

"I want him to support our children but he is refusing," said the mother, who asked not to be named.

The woman said since 2013, Mulaudzi has been paying R1 700 to maintain the three children on a monthly basis.

She said he however stopped the payments in September last year. "These children are attending school in Muledane and I pay for their transport while he does nothing," she said.

When African Eye News Service contacted Mulaudzi for comment, he confirmed knowing the woman and the three children.

“It is true I am in court, but I am now disputing the paternity of the children. It is only after I will have failed paternity tests that you can write that I am irresponsible if I do not pay maintenance,” he said.

The case was postponed to May 5.

In 2012, Mulaudzi was suspended as the head of traffic at the Thulamela local municipality in Thohoyandou after facing 820 fraud charges and 820 charges of contravening National Road Traffic Act 93.

He was acquitted of all the charges and rose up the EFF ranks, becoming one of their 25 parliamentarians.
