Justice and Correctional Services Minister appoints four chief magistrates

Justice and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha has appointed four chief magistrates to fill vacancies at four magistrates’ courts. The appointees are Daniel Thulare (Cape Town)‚ Edmund Bhekumthetho Ngubane (Durban)‚ Elmarie de Klerk (Palm Ridge) and Yoliswa Puleng Sidlova (Randburg). Masutha made these appointments following the recommendation made by the Magistrates Commission‚ which is chaired by Judge Francis Legodi.The ministry said the appointment of De Klerk and Sidlova was a significant milestone in the transformation of the magistracy as it increased the number of female chief magistrates to 12 out of a total of 21 country-wide.“I have full confidence that these men and women will not only strive for excellence in the performance outputs of their courts but will also play a critical role in the transformation of the Magistracy‚” Masutha said in a statement.The Magistrates Commission is responsible for the selection of suitable candidates for appointment as magistrates.Masutha said the commission had found that each of the candidates had a proven track record of managerial experience required for this highest judicial office at the district court level...
