ANC poised to oust Ehrenreich as leader

Firebrand Western Cape Cosatu leader Tony Ehrenreich's position as official leader of the opposition in Cape Town could be up for grabs. ANC heavyweights said he has fallen out of favour. The ANC in Cape Town on Wednesday held its regional list conference to elect representatives to stand as councillors in the upcoming local government elections.Ehrenreich became a councillor in 2011 in a bid by the ANC to neutralise the DA. He went up against Patricia de Lille but he failed to win majority support.ANC insiders explained that, despite Ehrenreich being nominated as one of the candidates, he is unlikely to become the ANC's mayoral candidate because he is "no longer the flavour of the month".Western Cape provincial executive members, Cape Town councillors and provincial legislature members, who all spoke on condition of anonymity, agreed Ehrenreich was highly unlikely to lead the party's challenge again."Nothing much needs to be said about him, he is no longer a favourite," said one ANC provincial executive committee member.Other party leaders said Ehrenreich was too busy to handle the position of opposition leader and that of Cosatu secretary.Another provincial executive committee member said the party needed to think very hard about who will be the next leader as De Lille is very popular."We need a credible leader who will pull support from both the coloured and African communities. If [the new candidate] is African, he must be popular there but be able to pull the coloured vote."That's the same if that candidate is a coloured. If you look at the current crop, you don't have anyone like that," said the provincial executive committee member.Ehrenreich declined to comment, referring questions to regional secretary Vuyiso "JJ" Tyhalisisu.Tyhalisisu said the Western Cape's regional executive was yet to approve the list of the proposed candidates before discussing a nomination of who would stand for mayor. The party's national leadership will make the final decision on candidates but regional and provincial leadership will submit a list of three preferred candidates.ANC national spokesman Zizi Kodwa said he could not comment on the matter as they were still waiting for the list...
