The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng has accepted President Jacob Zuma’s apology that followed the Constitutional Court judgment against him. It also urged soul-searching on his part and that of the party’s national leadership. It said this in a statement on Sunday following a “successful hosting of the highest decision-making structure of the ANC in the province in between provincial conferences - the Provincial General Council (PGC)”.“The PGC resolved:“1 To accept the apology of the president;“2 That the president‚ NEC (national executive committee) and the whole movement must continue reflecting on the matter.“3 To continue to collectively defend the ANC and its work to improve the lives of our people‚ and will ensure a decisive victory on the 3rd August.“4 That no province has the authority to tell another province what decisions to take on organisational matters.”This appeared to be a backing down as Gauteng’s provincial executive committee had in April reportedly decided that Zuma was no longer fit to lead the party‚ becoming the first province to defy a decision by the ANC NEC to support the president. The decision to push for Zuma’s axing followed a number of branches in Johannesburg that have written to ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe calling for Zuma’s resignation following the Constitutional Court judgment against him.Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng ruled that Zuma violated the Constitution in his handling of the Nkandla matter.Zuma subsequently blamed wrong legal advice for his actions and apologised to the public. The ANC in Gauteng has always been at odds with Zuma with provincial chairperson Paul Mashatile vocal on the Nkandla debacle.Jack Bloom ‏@JackBloom of the Democratic Alliance tweeted of the news: “What a pathetic climb down”. ..
