He's gone! Senzo Mchunu loses political battle with Zikhalala

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu has resigned as KwaZulu-Natal premier‚ following the ANC's National Working Committee decision‚ eNCA reports. Times Media Digital reported on Friday that Mchunu had been given until Monday to go.Mchunu's absence fuels fears of his axingKwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu's absence at the national prayer day event in Durban on Sunday has fuelled rumours that he is on his way out of the province's most powerful office on Monday. The premier‚ once a staunch ally of President Jacob Zuma‚ lost his seat as provincial chairman to Sihle Zikhalala in November last year and since then Zikhalala’s supporters have openly campaigned to remove him as premier. Mchunu’s axing is seen as giving Zuma’s supporters powerful leverage ahead of the local government elections.At the weekend‚ Mchunu cancelled his attendance at public events‚ including a prayer day with Zuma in Durban on Saturday.The resignation comes after the ANC's spokesperson‚ Zizi Kodwa‚ stated earlier that there was no announcement about Mchunu‚ adding that reporting on the rumours was “reckless journalism”.On Monday morning‚ Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane said ANC members need to rise above their divisions in KwaZulu-Natal ahead of the August 3 municipal elections.“I think the time has come for all of us to put our egos aside and put the ANC first ‚” she said.“Anything that hurts the ANC worries me; anything that has the potential to divide supporters of the ANC does worry me‚” she said...
