Boot men for female mayors - ANC women tell ruling party

The African National Congress Women's League has called for gender equality in mayoral positions in the August 3 local government elections.This comes as the African National Congress Women's League have been unequivocal about being at the forefront of fighting for the rights of women in South Africa."One of the most critical successes of the ANCWL has been its call within the structures of the ANC that women must be represented on a 50/50 basis. The first success was the adoption of the 50/50 policy by the ANC after many years of ANCWL campaigning and mobilising for such a policy," said ANCWL secretary general Meokgo Matuba. "As the leader in the emancipation of women in [South Africa]‚ the ANCWL will continue to fight and remind the ANC to not compromise the 50/50 policy in deploying cadres for mayoral positions in Metropolitans‚ District and Local Municipalities of South Africa.
