Makhura encourages outgoing mayors to work right up to elections

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has thanked outgoing mayors in the province for their services over their five-year term in office."We have worked extremely well with all the municipalities regardless of which party has been in governance. We have worked really well with these men and women‚” he said.Makhura was speaking at the Gauteng provincial offices where mayors in the so-called Gauteng City Region signed a declaration on Friday. The declaration will result in the creation of a single integrated provincial transport authority. The single transport authority is part of the Gauteng government’s 25-year plan for transport and spatial development.According to Makhura‚ a single transport authority for the province will afford commuters an opportunity to travel to various destinations within the city region with a single ticket even if they use different modes of transport.Without divulging the cost of this system‚ he said this initiative would "drastically reduce travelling costs and times for commuters".However‚ Makhura could not outline how exactly this would happen as some modes of transport would feel robbed of profit. He also encouraged the mayors to continue rolling out their plans ahead of the local government elections which will take place on August 3."My word to you mayors is that you must do this work without fear that when you are doing it‚ it will be said you are campaigning."There can be no vacuum in government‚ continue to roll out your plans... wherever you are. Roll out your plans up to the 2nd of August‚ even the last minute of your plan is important‚" added Makhura...
