COPE members attacked by alleged ANC members in North West

Congress of the People (COPE) said on Sunday that some of its members had been attacked by alleged ANC members while campaigning in North West. “Armed with stones and zoro plastic swords‚ the assailants in the ANC t-shirts drove the acting secretary for the COPE North West and his team out of an informal settlement in Swartruggens where they conducted our election campaign‚” said COPE spokesman Dennis Bloem.He said the attack had been reported to the local police station but that the police were reluctant to charge the assailants “apparently because they were not sure what case to open against the suspects”.“Accompanied by the police‚ the attacked COPE team went back to the area just to carry on with their campaign.“The assailants tried for the second time to prevent them from campaigning in the area.“One person was arrested but surprisingly he was charged with public drinking after trying to attack members with stones‚” Bloem said.He condemned the attack‚ saying it was “absolutely unacceptable”...
