The full list of nominations of candidates to succeed Thuli Madonsela as public protector was released on Tuesday.Members of the public have until Friday July 8 to comment on‚ or object to‚ any of the now 59 names before a special Parliament ad hoc committee working to appoint a new public protector‚ when Thuli Madonsela’s term of office ends in October.Chairperson of the ad hoc committee‚ Makhosi Khoza‚ told reporters in Parliament on Tuesday afternoon that the received 73 applications and nominations fell to 59‚ after some of those whose names were put forward declined nomination. Others could not be reached to accept or decline nomination.Nominations that fell away included that of former president Thabo Mbeki.Among those who declined nomination were former first lady Graca Machel‚ advocate Gerrie Nel and former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene.“A special committee will be called after July 8 so that all ad hoc committee members will meet to discuss the way forward. The committee must also decide how many people will be shortlisted during this meeting‚” Khoza said.Nominees’ identity documents will be accessible upon contacting Parliamentary personnel‚ but phone numbers will be withheld.“We have uploaded the CVs as they are and removed the ID number‚ cell phone number and the number of dependants‚” Khoza said. The notable nominees include High Court in Cape Town Judge Siraj Desai‚ legal analyst Pierre de Vos‚ advocate Dali Mpofu‚ advocate Loyiso Mpumlwana‚ Phillip Dexter and author Pregs Govender.Khoza also had strong words for those who believed that she could be influenced by her political superiors at Luthuli House to select a candidate most palatable to the ANC.“I am not a pushover. I would not like for people to think that is what I’m here to be‚” she said. “This is also not a process that will be handled by me. This is a process that Parliament will have to finalise in the national assembly and even after‚ the President will have to determine this appointment.”HOW TO HAVE YOUR SAY:The names and CVs of candidates can be accessed via Parliament’s website and social media platforms.
