A parliamentary committee will meet on Wednesday “to decide on the shortlist of candidates vying for the public protector position”.A statement on behalf of Public Protector Ad Hoc Committee chairperson Dr Makhosi Khoza said “the meeting will first deliberate on the criteria for shortlisting‚ number of candidates to be shortlisted and then allow individual committee members an opportunity to motivate for their preferred shortlist ”.It will then‚ Khoza continued‚ “have to determine the suitable date for interviews‚ as well as procedural matters such as time to be allocated to each shortlisted candidate”.Also on the agenda will be discussions around how the committee “intends processing the comments and objections it received from the public participation process” which closed on July 8.Among those will be a “vetted candidate list”‚ which the Corruption Watch and the Democratic Governance and Rights Unit said they submitted to the committee last week.In a statement on Tuesday‚ the civil rights bodies said they set out “to determine whether or not the 62 nominated candidates meet the minimum statutory requirements for the position of public protector‚ as stipulated in the Public Protector Act‚ by examining the candidates’ work experience and educational qualifications as stated in the candidates’ CVs”.“We trust that this will assist the committee in preparing the shortlist of candidates to be interviewed and that it will enable well-informed public participation in the process‚” they said. That list can be viewed here. The non-renewable term of office for the incumbent‚ Thuli Madonsela‚ comes to an end in October.
