Tau seeks counsel from Mbeki after nomination

City of Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau has sought counsel from former president Thabo Mbeki after his nomination to the United Cities and Local Government.Mbeki had a brief meeting with Tau on Monday in his foundation’s offices in Killarney to discuss the nomination and get a brief on what the city is doing on the transformation of apartheid spatial patterns. “We were here to brief former president Mbeki on the work that we are doing as a city but also the international responsibilities. We had to seek his advice on the work that we are doing internationally. As you know I have been nominated to be president of United Cities and Local Government which is a global responsibility. I thought it would be appropriate to seek counsel and advice from our elders and leaders on that work‚” Tau told reporters after the meeting. The African leg of the UCLG has nominated Tau as president of the global local government organisation.After the meeting‚ Mbeki could not take questions from journalists but his spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga gave a brief feedback on the meeting.“He (Tau) was briefing the former president about the work that the city is doing on the spatial transformation. He also briefed him on the work that the city is doing‚ more generally‚ on delivery of services to the people‚ public finance management…It was more of a courtesy call on the former president and generally to brief him on the work the city is doing‚” said Ratshitanga.He added that the former president supported Tau’s candidacy to the UCLG...
