Talk of who would control some of South Africa’s biggest metros started to gain traction on social media ahead of Wednesday afternoon’s anticipated coalition announcements.

At 8am‚ the hashtag #CoalitionTalks was trending on Twitter in South Africa. Constitutional expert Pierre de Vos ‏@pierredevos tweeted a link to an opinion piece by political analyst Steven Friedman:

The tears are not likely to materialise as it was reported on Tuesday that the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) had decided not to form coalition governments with either the African National Congress (ANC) or the Democratic Alliance (DA) – effectively giving Johannesburg to the ANC and Tshwane to the DA.

Justice4All ‏@Unathi_Kwaza welcomed this news‚ tweeting: “It's good news if it's true DA and EFF have decided not to be in coalition with each other. I'd be worried if either consider ANC though.”

Malome Nkuruziza ‏@MotlotlegiTT saw an accident being avoided: “*chortles* Dr Somadoda Fikeni says if the EFF goes into a coalition with the DA it might end up as a collision.”

Oupa Hlungwani‏@HlungwaVhM‚ however‚ was not at all pleased: “@SakinaKamwendo @amliveonsafm I voted for change. I expect @EFFSouthAfrica and @Our_DA to form a coalition and make it work”.

Nicholas smuts ‏@Nicholas_kade_s pondered the possibility of the red shirts hooking up with the ruling party: “So @EFFSouthAfrica forming coalition with @MYANC What happened to the previous statement made? Guess this is the 1st of many lies”.

Nonhlanhla Sifumba ‏@NonnysZA wasn’t wearing her political heart on her sleeve‚ and offered a neutral tweet: “As most are anxiously waiting to hear about the outcome of coalition negotiations. May the electorate emerge triumphant! People first”.
