ANC councillors take up opposition benches ahead of Tshwane meeting
African National Congress (ANC) councillors in Tshwane appeared to have accepted defeat. Before Friday’s council sitting commenced‚ they headed straight to the opposition benches the Democratic Alliance (DA) used to occupy before the local government elections. Members were set to vote on the mayor and speaker of council at noon.The DA was expected to take over the council from the ANC‚ following a commitment by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) that it would vote for the opposition rather than the ruling party.EFF members‚ led by the party spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi‚ came into the chambers chanting songs of victory against the ANC.ANC members stood watching in defeat‚ and there was a noticeable absence of senior or provincial party leaders.National DA leader Mmusi Maimane and the provincial leader‚ John Moodey‚ led the DA contingent.Tshwane city manager Jason Ngobeni was to conduct proceedings before the swearing in of the new speaker of council. – TMG Digital..
