Would the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) stick to its guns and oppose the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Herman Mashaba taking over as Johannesburg mayor? Or was EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi’s big hug on Monday morning evidence of a softening of hostility towards Mashaba? The Red Berets had indicated that‚ while rejecting coalitions with other opposition parties‚ it would vote with the DA in hung councils to unseat the African National Congress (ANC).A snag in Johannesburg‚ however‚ is that the EFF has voiced it opposition to Mashaba as mayor‚ with EFF chairperson Dali Mpofu saying last week that it could not support the DA’s candidate as he had said the “poor can’t be trusted to rule”.On Monday‚ @HermanMashaba retweeted a photo taken by eNCA’s Julia Housdon ‏@julzhousdon ‚ which showed: “#EFF's @MbuyiseniNdlozi and #DA's @HermanMashaba embrace before the new #JoburgMayor elected‚ Watch live on @eNCA”.#EFF's @MbuyiseniNdlozi and #DA's @HermanMashaba embrace before the new #JoburgMayor elected, Watch live on @eNCApic.twitter.com/aPo1Q6Ql9C— Julia Housdon (@julzhousdon) August 22, 2016async There were apparent divisions within the EFF as angry members of the party protested outside the Johannesburg City Hall during the inaugural council meeting on Monday.Wearing their trademark red‚ they carried posters saying “#EFFSOLDOUT” under the watchful eye of police personnel. They are part of a faction within the EFF which believes the party should not have supported the “white DA”. ..
