Johannesburg councillors sworn in

The swearing-in of 270 councillors in the City of Johannesburg has been completed.

For the better part of Monday morning‚ Gauteng High Court Judge President Dunstan Mlambo swore in the councillors in groups of 20.

Outside the Johannesburg City Hall where the inaugural meeting is taking place‚ there was still a crowd of people protesting.

Among them were a group dressed in colours of the Economic Freedom Fighters carrying placards saying “#EFFSOLDOUT” and A silent protest staged by members of the Johannesburg Emergency Service.

City manager Trevor Fowler moved on to the election of the speaker of council.

The African National Congress nominated Constance Bapela to take the position. Bapela has served as speaker for the past five years.

The Democratic Alliance nominated Vasco Da Gama.
