The swearing-in of councillors in the City of Ekurhuleni has gotten underway.A total of 244 councillors were to be sworn in on Tuesday at the council’s inaugural meeting.Council proceedings began as scheduled at 10am‚ watched by a huge media contingent. By 10.30am‚ councillors were being sworn in in groups of 10.A big marquee had been erected outside to host hundreds of members of the public who came to witness the proceedings.Members of the African National Congress (ANC) were in high spirits‚ perhaps celebrating that the party performed better in Ekurhuleni than in other two metros of Gauteng – Tshwane and Johannesburg.“Inkomo ingazal' umuntu. Akho' Malema ozophatha la ekhaya‚” they sang in jubilation. The song‚ loosely translated‚ means: “You will never see it happen. Malema will never run this place.” The ANC has 109 seats‚ Democratic Alliance 77‚ Economic Freedom Fighters 25 and the African Independent Congress has four‚ while the Inkatha Freedom Party and Freedom Front Plus have two seats each. Some other smaller parties have one seat apiece. - TMG Digital..
