The Outsourcing Must Fall movement has thrown its weight behind the Fees Must Fall protests in a move to consolidate the struggle of students and workers in the higher education sector. A programme of action is set to be adopted at a mass meeting to be held in Pretoria on Saturday‚ but the movement has already vowed to bring the capital to a standstill until the demands of students and those of workers in the higher education sector were met.Wits poll for students and staff ‘to have a say’ goes ahead despite court challengeThe University of the Witwatersrand’s (Wits) poll which offers students and staff a chance to “have a say on whether you want the academic programme to continue” next week opened on Thursday. Vusi Mahlangu‚ a student activist and a key player in the Outsourcing Must Fall campaign‚ said they had resolved to embark on a mutual campaign to further advance their common struggle. He said the demand for the abolishment of outsourcing‚ a R10 000 minimum wage for workers and the reinstatement of dismissed workers will now be part of the Fees Must Fall protest.“We resolved to mobilise and join the ongoing students protests not only in solidarity but also to submit a new set of workers' demands following the betrayal of workers by university managements through lack of full adherence to the memorandum of agreement signed at the beginning of the year‚” he said. Mahlangu said they also want the immediate release of all students arrested in connection with the fees protest‚ harsh treatment of students at the hands of police and private security as well as a stop of attempts to kick out students from residences.Outsourcing Must Fall coordinator Mameltlwe Sebei said Minister of Higher Education and Training Blade Nzimande was right that the student protest was an anti-African National Congress (ANC) government agenda.“The neo-liberal ANC government has failed to deliver on the promise of free education. We are saying those who defend the fees must also fall. The ANC government is defending the fees‚ therefore it must fall‚” he said.Tshwane University of Technology student representative council president Banele Malefo said the movement's support was not welcomed as its leaders were amongst those used by the third force to destabilise the higher education sector. He called on students not to allow themselves to be misled‚ insisting that students will only take their mandate from genuine structures fighting genuine battles.“Students know who is legitimate and who is not. They will not be misled by the pawns of third forces‚” he said. – TMG Digital/The Times..
