Motsoeneng a modern day Goebbels: DA

12 October 2016 - 18:20 By Roxanne Henderson

The Democratic Alliance's James Selfe has called the South African Broadcasting Corporation's Hlaudi Motsoeneng a modern day Joseph Goebbels‚ accusing him of using the public broadcaster as a propaganda machine. In court papers filed in the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday‚ the DA asks for Motsoeneng to be totally removed from the SABC. It also wants the SABC board to be held inquorate‚ as it only have six remaining members and requires nine for a quorum. In the DA's founding affidavit‚ Selfe launches an attack on Motsoeneng's character."Mr Motsoeneng is a threat to South African democracy. He is an unethical‚ manipulative fraudster who has destroyed any semblance of good corporate governance at the SABC. Moreover‚ he is a modern day Goebbels who treats the public broadcaster as his personal fiefdom to spread propaganda."Goebbels was the Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany between 1933 and 1945. He was known for his skills as an orator and was devoted to Adolf Hitler. His ministry took control of the media‚ arts and information in Germany‚ with Geobbels using radio and film to spread propaganda.Selfe said Motsoeneng had flourished at the SABC due to the protection of the SABC board."Instead of removing him‚ the SABC and certain members of its board have protected and promoted Mr Motsoeneng."In doing so‚ they have defied the Public Protector‚ the Judiciary and Parliament. This must come to an end. No man is above the law. The only way to stop Mr Motsoeneng is for the Courts to remove him from his current position and prevent him from holding any other public position unless and until the Public Protector’s findings have been set aside by a court."The Supreme Court of Appeal last month dismissed an application for leave to appeal by Motsoeneng‚ bringing into effect the Western Cape High Court's decision that his appointment as chief operations officer at the SABC was highly irregular and must be set aside.Outgoing public protector Thuli Madonsela's 2014 findings in her report‚ "When Governance and Ethics Fail‚" found that Motsoeneng had lied about his matric qualifications and irregularly increased his salary. He is currently employed as the broadcaster's chief of corporate affairs. The SABC has been approached for comment. - TMG Digital..
