African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) president Collen Maine may need to bring in the legal guns after the Congress of the People (Cope) opened a criminal complaint against him on Sunday. The party said it “laid a charge of incitement of violence after Maine called on Umkhonto we Sizwe veterans to take up arms to defend the revolution on 15 October 2016 in Ethekweni” in Pretoria.At the “Hands off Zuma” march ‚ Maine said: “Comrades from UmKhonto we Sizwe‚ bring your guns‚ now is the time to defend the revolution. We must do it. Generations that came before did it. They sacrificed their lives.”Cope’s Dennis Bloem said the utterance contravenes section (16) (2) (b) of the Constitution which “excludes from the right of freedom of expression‚ incitement of imminent violence”.“It is very clear that this loose cannon Maine does not know the history of Umkhonto we Sizwe‚ the military wing of the ANC‚” he said.“Maine must know that this military wing was formed for a specific mission and purpose‚ it was never destined to kill people.”Bloem said the “leaders such as the late Joe Modise‚ Joe Slovo and Chris Hani must be turning in their graves hearing what Maine said about the Umkhonto we Sizwe – calling on them to take up arms and kill for a corrupt individual like (President Jacob) Zuma”.The Democratic Alliance Youth said it will also lay criminal charges against Maine‚ with its Yusuf Cassim describing his statements as “dangerous‚ callous and irresponsible”‚ citing the same section as Bloem did.“It is telling that at a time of profound crisis for young South Africans‚ with universities shut down and youth unemployment rapidly rising‚ the ANCYL is more concerned with protecting Jacob Zuma than the plight of our youth‚” Cassim stated.– TMG Digital..
