Despite the African National Congress calling on its youth league leader Collen Maine to withdraw his “bring your guns” statement‚ the Democratic Alliance said on Monday it would lay a criminal charge against him.

The DA will follow the example of the Congress of the People‚ which opened a criminal complaint against Maine on Sunday.

At the “Hands off Zuma” march last week‚ Maine said: “Comrades from UmKhonto we Sizwe‚ bring your guns‚ now is the time to defend the revolution. We must do it. Generations that came before did it. They sacrificed their lives.”

The DA welcomed the ANC’s call on Maine to retract the statements. “However‚ this does not negate the criminality of his conduct‚ and we will accordingly proceed with laying criminal charges against Mr Maine with the South African Police Service.

“Incitement of violence is a very serious crime that goes against the spirit and intent of our Constitution‚ and the principle of the Rule of Law‚” the DA said in a statement.
