Who and what gets mentioned most in Madonsela’s state capture report

Going on numbers‚ the Gupta family could be said to have captured Thuli Madonsela’s State of Capture report.

The word Gupta appears 224 times in the 355-page document which the High Court in Pretoria ordered to be released on Wednesday. Ajay Gupta gets 35 mentions‚ while his brothers‚ Atul and Rajesh are named four times apiece.

Their company‚ Oakbay‚ appeared 58 times‚ while the Guptas’ alleged fixer‚ Fana Hlongwane‚ gets brought up 22 times.

The name Zuma was typed 164 times in the compiling of the probe’s findings with the president’s first name‚ Jacob‚ getting five mentions‚ while his that of his son‚ Duduzane‚ gets 14. The latter is sometimes referred to as D Zuma in the report.

Zuma’s position‚ “president”‚ trails “minister” by 207 to 245.

Of the two members of the executive who‚ along with Zuma‚ tried to prevent the publication of the report‚ Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane’s 33 outdid Cooperative Governance Minister Des van Rooyen’s 19.

But outdoing them both was the man who reportedly turned down R600-million in inducements and the offer of his superior’s job‚ Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas‚ who gets 90 mentions.

Brian Molefe – the Eskom CEO possibly in a bit of a pickle over the number of calls he allegedly made to the Guptas and their associates – gets named 71 times. The utility he heads‚ Eskom was brought up 916 times.

Public Enterprise Minister Lynne Brown - who appointed the Eskom board alleged to have approved some dodgy deals - only features 10 times.

Other notable tallies include “constitution” at 73‚ “law” at 60 and “corruption” at 44; but with a surprisingly low word count are “untoward” (14)‚ “fruitless” (11)‚ “crime” (6) and “fraud” (2).

While “state” is printed 758 and “capture” 360 times‚ the phrase “state capture” itself is used only twice.
