The leader of the Democratic Alliance in the Johannesburg City Council‚ Herman Mashaba‚ has thanked the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) for their contribution to the council’s coalition government.

The EFF voiced its reservations about Mashaba after last year’s local government elections‚ initially saying it would only support the DA in its bid for power in the city on condition that Mashaba was not the DA’s choice for mayor.

However‚ the red berets have since softened their position‚ saying that there was nothing they could do if the DA wanted to put him forward as the metro’s leader.

“Although not a coalition party‚ I'd like to express my deep appreciation to the EFF for their robust interaction in our administration‚” Mashaba said.

He was speaking at the 2015/16 annual general meeting of the City’s entities at the Joburg Theatre on Thursday.

“The DA and our coalition partners are grateful for the role that the EFF have played and keeps on playing. We have our philosophical differences here and there‚ but when it comes to matters of national importance‚ the EFF have been exceptionally supportive‚” added Mashaba.

In the 2016 local government elections‚ the EFF chose to support opposition parties in all hung municipalities‚ including the IFP in KwaZulu-Natal and the Service Delivery Forum in Rustenburg‚ North West.
