The police minister‚ Nathi Nhleko‚ has defended the decision by the Hawks to ask finance minister Pravin Gordhan questions about the establishment of a “rogue unit” inside the South African Revenue Service.

He said that when he was under investigation while deputy president‚ President Jacob Zuma had also been asked a list of questions. “It’s in the ordinary conduct of the work of such a unit. This actually happened in relation to the deputy president at the time.”

“There’s nothing out of the ordinary for the Hawks unit to pose certain questions‚” he said.

Nhleko said no individuals were under investigation. “The investigation that is currently under way is about the establishment and the existence of what is called the ‘rogue unit’.”

The minister said he could not say “how many people are being investigated.”

Asked if he had met Gordhan he replied: “Ministers meet from time-to-time.”

He said that the Hawks accepted Gordhan’s explanation that he was unable to meet the deadline to answer the questions‚ as he was preparing to deliver the national Budget to parliament and had insufficient time to prepare his response.

“The answer that today’s deadline could not be met is sufficient.”

He warned reporters: “You are beginning to swim in a vortex.”
