Leila Chirayath Janah: Keynote speaker at the Tech4Africa Conference
The Tech4Africa conference is a web and emerging technology conference being held at The Campus in Bryanston and is the first conference of it's kind in Africa. The conference bodes international and South African speakers who convened in one building to discuss the business and technical developments in the internet.
Amongst the international speakers gathered at the event, was Leila Chirayath Janah, the founder and CEO of Samasource. Samasource is an international "social business that connects over 800 impoverished women, youth and refugees to digital work."
The business outsources work from companies based in America, to poor people in countries such as Kenya, Nairobi, Haiti and India.
Janah developed the company after working in Kenya teaching young people in that country to read and write.
The company developed a web based systems that can be accessed in remote areas using existing desktops and infrastructure such as a computer/internet access shop in that area that has internet access to do work such as data capturing.
The company brings work and employment opportunities to people in poor remote areas where "people lack access to work."
Whilst making her presentation, Janah made an example of Somali pirates who are forced into that "profession" because they can earn close to 17$ a day.
Janah's business is a non-profit organisation that get their employees through contractors in those countries and their employees, after undergoing basic training are commissioned to do work for American companies.
Samasource is a business geared towards development and poverty alleviation in poor countries.
Janah refers this business model as a "business process outsourcing." She says that this is a 530 billion dollar industry that creates jobs around the world.
