World tries to save bluefin tuna

An international conference in Turkey is focusing on how to monitor illegal catches of the Atlantic bluefin tuna, which has been severely overfished to feed the sushi market across the globe.

The question is whether representatives from 48 countries will seek stricter fishing quotas at the meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas, or ICCAT. The meeting started Friday and ends Nov. 19.

The European Union's executive Commission is expected to propose electronic surveillance to monitor the catches of the prized tuna, preferred for its tender red meat.

There is also growing concern over the fishing of sharks and swordfish.
