Wonderful finale to Assassins Creed
Revelations is the fourth and final part of the Assassins Creed saga to feature Desmond Miles, Altair ibn La-Ahad and Ezio Auditore da Firenze.
GAME: ASSASSINS CREED: REVELATIONS (PS3)
AGE: 16+
PRICE: R550
It's appropriate as the modern-day action of all of the games has been set in 2012. The series consists of fascinating trips through Byzantine and Renaissance history as modern-day bartender Desmond goes into the Animus (a complex memory machine) to return to the times of his Assassin ancestors in search of pieces of the Apple of Eden.
In Revelations, the Animus has so fragmented Desmond's mind that he is in a coma and risks death unless he can tie up the loose ends of the story and separate out the three characters in his splintered memory.
Revelations takes Ezio to Constantinople and Masyaf's castle of Altair's era, where he has to evade Templars while trying to find the true purpose of the Assassins.
Eventually, all the centuries-long threads of betrayal, intrigue and murder are tied up. The game is just as vast as its predecessors and the addition of a hookblade allows you to zipline around many of the locations much faster. Ezio/Altair also has more than 100 types of bombs to create from objects he can buy or loot from dead opponents.
Once again, though, the premium is on stealth and trickery rather than brute force. Trying to walk calmly away from a kill and blend into the crowd can send your real-life heart rate through the roof. Assassins Creed has stood out from its contemporaries by its sheer subject matter and its exquisite rendering of historical locations.
THE GOOD
A series with historical accuracy; where the boy with the biggest toy doesn't always win; where the ancient culture of the Middle East is not something to be bombed back to the Dark Ages - there's a lot to like before you get to the game itself.
It's a wonderful finale to an exceptional series. Although there are multiplayer and online options, the first-person campaign is still the focus.
THE BAD
Some erratic control of movement, especially when using your stealth skills to traverse high areas. Totally missing your landing point as you jump from a dizzy height might be very realistic, but it's incredibly irritating.
RATING: 8.8
