A new hoax formerly restricted to Europe is hitting South Africa's shores according to Dial a Nerd - fake Microsoft support.

When someone phones you to tell you they are from Microsoft or a company affiliated with Microsoft and your computer has a virus on it, they are lying in order to scam you and install malware on your computer.

The malware will track everything you do on the computer in order to sell the information to spammers, and gather your bank details.

Microsoft does not generally cold call people.

If this sounds like something that has happened to you, get your computer to a specialist to get it fixed and avoid doing any Internet banking until you do. If you get a phone call that sounds like this, try to fish for information and get it to the cops.
