Members of environment pressure group Greenpeace breached security fences at two Swedish nuclear plants in what they called a "stress test".

According to Greenpeace about 70 activists took part in the protest at the Forsmark plant, north of Stockholm, and at Ringhals in south-western Sweden.

"We hope that the security issues at the Swedish plants will be considered seriously," Greenpeace said in a statement, urging Environment Minister Lena Ek to "immediately shut down the reactors."

Police and security personnel at the plant said 16 activists were apprehended at the Ringhals plant while 43 were detained at Forsmark. The activists had not entered any of the reactor buildings.

Sweden currently operates 10 nuclear reactors. Two Swedish reactors have been decommissioned, the most recent in May 2005.
