Kruger to have gate quotas over Christmas

The Kruger National Park will enforce a gate quota system during the festive season, officials says.

The system would be used to control the influx of visitors to the park to avoid overcrowding, spokesman William Mabasa said.

"Day visitors are advised to make a pre-booking to secure their entry at the entrance gate."

They would have to pay a non-refundable deposit of R28 an adult and R14. The booking would lapse at 1pm.

Mabasa said most of the gates reached their full daily quotas fairly early in the day on long weekends and over the festive season.

"We encourage anyone who is planning to visit the park to either come early or make a pre-booking to secure entry."

Once the daily quota had been reached, only visitors who had made pre-bookings would be allowed in. The rest would have to queue and wait for other visitors to leave. The system would not affect overnight visitors.

"An advanced booking does not exempt daily visitors from paying the conservation fees upon their arrival at the gates," said Mabasa.

Visitors would be expected to produce an identity document or other form of identification at the gate. No alcohol was allowed in the park.
