Ninety-six rhinos have been poached in South Africa since the beginning of the year, the environmental affairs department said.

"Of the rhino poached, 66 rhino were killed in the Kruger National Park, 11 in North West, and 10 in KwaZulu-Natal," spokesman Albi Modise said in a statement.

Five more were poached in Limpopo and four more in Mpumalanga.

Modise said that since January 1, 34 people had been arrested for poaching and related crimes.

Since last Wednesday, nine alleged poachers were arrested in the Kruger National Park and one in Limpopo.

Three people were arrested in Johannesburg for allegedly transporting products derived from rhinos.

In addition, Modise said that four suspected poachers were killed in a confrontation with Kruger National Park rangers on Saturday.
