BBM will cease being exclusive to Blackberry this weekend.

According to a statement from Blackberry customers will be able to download the service for free on Google Play and the App Store.

It will also be available directly from www.BBM.com.

Android smartphones running Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean can download the service 21 September from about 1pm South Africa time. iPhones running  iOS 6 and iOS 7 will be able to download it 22 September.

Blackberry says the service has more than 60 million monthly users, and the majority of them use it for an average of 90 minutes a day.
