Police have arrested several people allegedly linked to an international cybercrime network in South Africa and the United States, the Hawks said.

Details of the arrests would be revealed at a press conference in Pretoria on Wednesday afternoon, Hawks spokesman Paul Ramaloko said.

Earlier French news agency Agence France-Presse reported that police, in a joint operation with the US, had made several arrests involving an international cybercrime network operating out of Pretoria.

US homeland security officers worked with South Africa to bring down "a West African criminal enterprise operating from South Africa with strong links to the United States", police said in a statement.

Arrests had also been made in Canada, Ramaloko told AFP, without giving numbers.

He said the suspects were due to appear in court in Pretoria later on Wednesday before being extradited to the US.

Nigerians were reportedly among those arrested.
