Poachers have killed another elephant in the Kruger National Park, 10km in from the Mozambican and Zimbabwean borders.

Rangers found the two-day old carcass with its tusks hacked off yesterday morning according to a media release.

This is the second elephant poaching incident in the Parfuri region of the Kruger national park, which is left vulnerable to this by its proximity to the Mozambique and Zimbabwe borders.

“Elephant poaching has been happening for a while now in Mozambique and Zimbabwe, so we did expect that it would at some stage reach our area,” said SANparks spokesperson William Mabasa.

The poaching issue is a multifaceted on, involving corrupt customs and parks officials in three countries, as well as South African trophy hunters and safari units helping orchestrate the hunts, according to independent intelligence sources.

While those sources have passed their information on to South African authorities, they have not received any feedback.
