The USB Promoter Group has finalised the design of the USB Type C play - and like apple's Lightning cables it is reversible

What this means is that you will be able to plug in a USB device - without having to worry about getting the orientation right, according to ars technica.

The connector will apparently be similar in size to current micro USB 2.0 Type-B connectors, and will be robust enough for laptops and tablets" and "slim enough for mobile phones." The openings for the connector measure roughly 8.4mm by 2.6mm.

The group has also announced that cables and adapters for older devices will be available, as the prevelance of these devices will make the shift to Type-C an arduous, years-long process.

According to the report the type C plug will be compatible with USB 3.1, which means it should double the speed you can transfer data to and from it.
