Addo Elephant National Park’s fight against rhino poaching was given a boost on Wednesday when the park took ownership of a Polaris all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and a specially designed anti-poaching trailer for use in the field. The park was able to finance the new vehicle through a monetary contribution by the MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet fundraising programme’s MyPlanet Rhino Fund‚ which is administered by the Endangered Wildlife Trust. The Rhino Action Group Effort and TW Steel donated the trailer.Park manager Mzwandile Mjadu said: “ATVs have proved to be indispensable workhorses in the park‚ allowing rangers to access remote areas…in order to ensure efficient area coverage.”The new vehicle replaces an older one‚ which was not repairable after four years of service. It can transport two field rangers armed with R1 rifles and equipment. The self-sustaining trailer is equipped with a solar panel‚ providing power to three batteries‚ which in turn charge radios‚ maintaining communication lines.A freezer also runs off the system‚ benefiting personnel deployed over long periods of time. It also contains a gas stove. - The Herald..
