R7 million expected from Free State Environmental Affairs game auction

An estimated 100 “special buyers” including professional hunters and breeders are expected to attend a game auction organised by the Free State government. Thirty buffaloes and 10 sable antelope are to be sold to the highest bidders tomorrow‚ according to the provincial Department of Economic‚ Small Business Development‚ Tourism and Environmental Affairs.“The aim of the auction is to optimise revenue generation for the province… whilst properly managing game population so as to comply with each reserve’s correct carrying capacity.”The first game auction in the province this year raised R15.5 million. It is estimated that this week’s auction will raise R7 million.During the tabling of the 2015/16 budget vote‚ the department said‚ “it was indicated that in order to improve revenue collection‚ the department will continue to contribute handsomely to the provincial fiscus through the proceeds of excess game”.“Transforming the industry is still government priority and to prove that‚ during the previous financial year‚ game to the value of R3 million was donated or loaned to nine black emerging game farmers.”..
