SA inventor of dolos sea buffer system dies aged 82

Aubrey Kruger‚ the former East London harbour draughtsman who designed the ingenious dolos sea buffer system 50 years ago‚ died in the city last week. Kruger‚ who had been a keen fisherman‚ diver and general "man of the sea"‚ died two days before his 82nd birthday last Tuesday. While harbour engineer Eric Merrifield was initially credited for their invention‚ a claim emerged in the 1990s that it was Kruger who came up with the interlocking concrete design‚ which is now used to dissipate waves at breakwaters the world over. His son‚ Lance Kruger‚ said the family had been delighted when Kruger's hand in the dolos design had been commemorated by the South African Mint‚ in the company's South African Inventions theme‚ just a couple of weeks before he passed away‚ Business Day reported on Wednesday.Read the story at www.bdlive.co.za...
