Shell-shocked cops find 9‚000 poached abalone in bakkie

A second dawn raid in two days has netted R1.5 million worth of poached abalone. The Cape Town K9 Unit and Department of Agriculture‚ Forestry and Fisheries officials swooped early on Friday after seeing a suspicious-looking vehicle near Lwandle‚ Somerset West.They gave chase and when they pulled over the Ford Ranger in Strand they found it packed with 9 417 abalone.The 30-year-old driver‚ from Zwelihle‚ Hermanus‚ attempted to flee but was arrested.He will appear in Strand Magistrate's Court on Monday with two men arrested near Lwandle early on Thursday and charged with illegal possession and transportation of abalone worth R1-million and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.Police spokesman FC van Wyk said: "The protection of our marine resources is high on the agenda of SAPS and their partners in the fight against crime‚ and regular breakthroughs are made in preventing these products from ending up on the illegal market."..
