A man will appear in the Orlando Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges of malicious damage to property for alleging removing almost 200 DA election posters, said police.

"It is one person and he is appearing tomorrow [Friday]," Captain Nomvula Mbense said on Thursday.

The Democratic Alliance has alleged that 179 posters were removed and defaced last month. They were found in a house in Orlando East.

"This has been an issue in Soweto since the beginning of the election campaign, where many DA candidates' posters have been removed from lampposts," DA provincial legislature member Khume Ramulifho said in a statement.

Ramulifho said the party had laid a similar complaint relating to an incident in Pimville, Soweto.

"This election must be free and fair. The DA is confident that the law will take its course in this matter. Political parties must have equal opportunity to reach as many voters as they can without foul play," said Ramulifho.
