Former Proteas captain and fast bowler Shaun Pollock has thrown his weight behind his home city Durban's bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Pollock released a video announcing his support - and challenged the city's other beloved sportsmen, including swimmer Chad Le Clos, Springbok Pat Lambie, and former Rugby World Cup winning captain, John Smit to do the same.

Durban's bid received a boost after the Commonwealth Games Federation evaluation commission endorsed the city.

Louise Martin, chairman of the evaluation commission was quoted as saying recently: “It is our recommendation the CGF general assembly votes to award the 2022 Commonwealth Games to the host city of Durban, South Africa, but subject to the final and timely delivery of a limited number of outstanding host city contract requirements”.

At a Durban Chamber of Commerce tourism forum discussion yesterday, chairman of the 2022 Commonwealth Games Durban bid Mark Alexander said the positive economic effect would run to R25 billion.

Voting begins on September 2.
